The City of Sagamihara concluded a friendship city agreement with Wuxi
in October, '85 and celebrated the 15th anniversary in 2000. During the
period, as many as 3,000 people have visited to deepen mutual relations
in the educational, economic, cultural and other fields.
Situated in the southern part of the Jiangsu Province, Wuxi is pretty much
close to Sagamihara in the climate. With a population of about 4.32 million,
Wuxi is one of the cities representing the Province. The city is well known
not only for its brisk industrial activities, but also for rice and raw
silk production. |

Scarborough, with whom Sagamihara had a friendship city agreement, merged
with 5 other neighboring municipalities to become the City of Toronto in
January, 1998. After consultation, Sagamihara and Toronto mutually agreed
to maintain the friendship city agreement, thus remaining committed to
develop further close relations in various fields, such as, education,
culture, sports and economy. With a population of about 2.5 million, Toronto
is Canada's largest city as the cultural as well as economic center. |

The City of Sagamihara, with a friendship city agreement with each of Wuxi,
China and Toronto, Canada, is located 35 - 40 kilometers away from Tokyo
and it is just an hour's drive to the center of Tokyo and Yokohama. The
population, which was just about 30,000 in 1920, increased up to about
615,000 in NovemberC'02, through the city's attraction of businesses and
factories into the region and the city's unprecedented rapid growth of
